In 1946 James Lewis set to work plastering a home he had built for himself and his family. Having had no experience, he taught himself the trade. He had a knack for it and learned quickly. It wasn't long before word spread, and he was working on other people's homes. James found himself working on some of the finest homes in Middle Tennessee, and in 1947 he founded J. L. Lewis Contractors.
Over 70 years later, J. L. Lewis Contractors specializes in stucco and Exterior Insulation Finish Systems (EIFS), and it still holds dear the reputation of its founder. Gary Lewis, his son, has been president since 1986. Richard Collins, a well-known figure in mid-state construction, joined as partner and operations manager in 2005.
